Four Color #1165

Four Color #1165, released by Dell Comics in 1961, stands as part of the long-running Four Color anthology series, which served as a proving ground for new characters and licensed properties. This specific issue features the Disney character Ludwig Von Drake, who made his debut alongside this comic during the 1961 television premiere of Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color. The issue was designed to introduce the eccentric, polymathic professor to audiences, leveraging the synergy between Dell's publishing efforts and the expansion of Disney's television programming.

The illustrations in this issue reflect the classic mid-century Disney house style, prioritizing clarity and expressive character movement to match Von Drake's manic personality. As a character developed specifically for an instructional and comedic role on screen, his transition to the page was handled with a focus on his signature frantic energy. While Dell Comics produced a vast library of these anthology issues, Four Color #1165 remains a notable artifact of the transition from late-stage Dell Disney licensing to the distinct aesthetic that defined the era's character-based comics.
