Where it came from
Kemono wa Hidamari ni Koi o Suru, written and illustrated by Mame Konishi, debuted in 2013 as part of the boys' love (BL) genre. The narrative focuses on the relationship between a hearing-impaired student and a classmate, exploring themes of communication, patience, and emotional growth. It emerged during a period where BL manga began to shift toward more nuanced, character-driven storytelling, moving beyond typical genre tropes to emphasize genuine connection and the practical challenges of navigating a relationship across a sensory divide.
Konishi’s aesthetic for the series is defined by a soft, expressive art style that complements the gentle nature of the plot. The character designs are deliberately understated, focusing on subtle facial expressions and body language to convey intimacy and misunderstandings without relying heavily on dialogue. Upon its release, the manga was well-received by readers for its sensitive portrayal of hearing impairment and its heartfelt pace, leading to the development of a sequel series and subsequent live-action adaptations.
