Ketteiban, Kamui-Den Zenshū: Gaiden #2

Ketteiban, Kamui-Den Zenshū: Gaiden is part of a definitive collection of Sanpei Shirato’s seminal gekiga work, Kamui-Den. This series was originally serialized starting in 1964 and became a cornerstone of the countercultural movement in Japan, famously exploring themes of social hierarchy, class struggle, and the brutal reality of Edo-period life through the perspective of an outcast ninja.

The Gaiden volumes serve as essential supplementary narratives that expand upon the intricate world-building of the original saga. The design of this definitive edition focuses on archival-quality preservation, utilizing the original raw artistic intent of Shirato’s stark, high-contrast ink work. It was curated for long-time readers and scholars interested in the structural evolution of the gekiga genre, and it has been received by critics as a necessary resource for understanding the influence of mid-century Japanese radicalism on the manga medium.
