Ketteiban, Kamui-Den Zenshū: Gaiden #11

Ketteiban, Kamui-Den Zenshū: Gaiden is a definitive archival collection of Sanpei Shirato’s influential gekiga manga, specifically focusing on the supplemental stories surrounding his masterpiece, Kamui-Den. Originally serialized in the 1960s, Kamui-Den was groundbreaking for its complex socio-political commentary on the Edo period’s caste system and its unflinching, gritty realism. The Gaiden series was designed to compile these tangential narratives, providing readers with a high-quality, comprehensive reference for the wider Kamui universe.

The design of this zenshū collection prioritizes historical preservation, featuring clean layouts that allow Shirato’s dense, kinetic ink-work to remain legible and immersive. Created to serve long-term fans and manga scholars alike, the series was received as a respectful retrospective that highlights Shirato’s technical mastery. As a seminal work in the gekiga movement, the collection preserves the stark, woodblock-inspired aesthetic that defined the series' look and cemented its reputation as a cornerstone of Japanese mature-audience comics.
