Ketteiban, Kamui-Den Zenshū: Gaiden #10

Ketteiban, Kamui-Den Zenshū: Gaiden is a definitive archival collection of the legendary gekiga series by Sanpei Shirato. The series, originally titled Kamui-den, debuted in the mid-1960s within the pages of the avant-garde magazine Garo and fundamentally shifted the landscape of Japanese manga. This specific Gaiden series serves as a crucial supplement, compiling side stories that flesh out the intricate socio-political world and the harsh, feudal realities inhabited by the protagonist, the runaway ninja Kamui.

The editorial design of the Zenshū collection was crafted to honor Shirato’s intense, high-contrast black-and-white aesthetic, which emphasizes the visceral nature of his storytelling. Shirato, alongside his brother and creative partner Tetsuya Okamoto, utilized these side stories to deepen the philosophical critique of the Edo period caste system found in the original work. Upon release, these archival editions were widely received by collectors and scholars as essential preservation efforts for one of the most influential manga works of the twentieth century.
