Le Dit du Genji - Asaki Yumemishi #4

Asaki Yumemishi is a celebrated manga adaptation of The Tale of Genji, authored and illustrated by Waki Yamato. Originally serialized in the late 1970s and 1980s, the work was commissioned to modernize Murasaki Shikibu’s eleventh-century classic, making the complex courtly intrigue and romantic entanglements of the Heian period accessible to a contemporary audience. Volume 4 is part of this expansive narrative, which is noted for its lush, detailed aesthetic that draws heavily on traditional Japanese art forms like emaki scrolls while employing distinct shojo manga sensibilities.

The French-language publication, titled Le Dit du Genji, introduced this seminal work to a francophone readership, maintaining the integrity of Yamato’s original visual storytelling. Upon its initial release in Japan, the series was highly regarded for its artistic ambition and educational value, eventually winning the Kodansha Manga Award. The design of the volumes emphasizes a balance between historical fidelity in costume and architecture and the expressive, emotive character portrayals that became Yamato’s signature style.
