Legion of Super-Heroes #37

Published in August 1987 as part of the third volume of the Legion of Super-Heroes series, this issue was a pivotal moment for DC Comics' futuristic team. It arrived during a period of complex narrative restructuring, specifically following the landmark 'Crisis on Infinite Earths' event, which forced the creative team to reconcile the Legion's convoluted timeline and origins. This issue contributed to the ongoing efforts by writers and editors to stabilize the team's continuity while exploring the maturing dynamics of its sprawling cast of teenage superheroes.

The creative direction for this era was largely spearheaded by writer Paul Levitz, who was instrumental in defining the Legion's character-driven tone throughout the 1980s. Alongside artist Greg LaRocque, Levitz sought to ground the high-concept sci-fi setting with interpersonal conflicts and shifting political alliances within the United Planets. The series was well-regarded by readers of the time for its intricate long-form storytelling and commitment to a cohesive, albeit dense, cosmic universe, setting a high standard for team-based superhero books of the decade.
