Legion of Super-Heroes #38

Legion of Super-Heroes #38, published by DC Comics in 1987, arrived during the 'Levitz era,' a defining period for the title written by Paul Levitz. This issue was part of a long-form storytelling approach that prioritized complex character development and sprawling intergalactic politics, solidifying the series' reputation for dense, continuity-heavy narratives. The cover and interior art by Greg LaRocque reflect the shift toward a more grounded, dramatic aesthetic that sought to balance the inherent whimsy of 30th-century super-heroics with the stakes of a changing cosmic landscape.

The issue serves as a chapter in the 'Great Darkness Saga' successor arcs, a time when the Legion was navigating themes of isolation and shifting loyalties. LaRocque’s clean, expressive linework was well-received by contemporary readers for bringing consistency to a large cast of characters, providing a visual anchor for Levitz’s intricate scripts. At the time of its release, the title maintained a dedicated following that appreciated the series' commitment to long-term subplots and its distinct identity within the broader DC Universe.
