Legion of Super-Heroes #36

Legion of Super-Heroes #36, published in 1987, arrived during the later years of the series' third volume. This period of DC Comics history saw the creative team working to navigate the continuity shifts following the company-wide Crisis on Infinite Earths event, which necessitated a significant restructuring of the Legion's complex 30th-century history. The title remained a staple of the publisher’s science fiction offerings, balancing character-driven soap opera tropes with high-concept futuristic stakes.

The issue features work by writer Paul Levitz and artist Greg LaRocque, a pair deeply associated with the Legion's mid-eighties aesthetic. LaRocque's clean, illustrative style served to ground the sprawling cast of colorful heroes within the distinct, sleek architectural environments of the United Planets. By this stage in the run, the creative team was focused on long-form storytelling arcs, and the issue reflects the industry trend of the era toward denser, more serialized narratives that rewarded readers who followed the title consistently over several years.
