Where it came from
Legion of Super-Heroes #42, published by DC Comics in 1988, serves as a pivotal installment during the 'Baxter Paper' era of the series. Written by Paul Levitz with art by Greg LaRocque, this issue continues the complex, multi-layered storytelling that defined the late-1980s Legion run. This period was characterized by more mature themes and intricate character development, moving away from the lighthearted tone of earlier decades to embrace the geopolitical struggles of a 30th-century interplanetary government.
The issue is notable for its commitment to the sprawling ensemble cast that made the title a staple of long-form comic book storytelling. Levitz, who spent much of the 1980s shaping the Legion's continuity, utilized this era to explore the political fallout of the Magic Wars and the internal tensions within the team. Greg LaRocque’s clean, precise linework helped ground the high-concept science fiction elements, providing a consistent visual identity that was well-regarded by fans of the series for its balance of action and character-focused dialogue.
