Where it came from
Magik #2, released in 1983, serves as the second installment of a four-part limited series focusing on Illyana Rasputin, the younger sister of the X-Men member Colossus. Created by writer Chris Claremont and illustrated by artist John Buscema, the series chronicles Illyana’s traumatic transformation within the demonic dimension of Limbo. The narrative serves as a pivotal character study, bridging the gap between her childhood innocence and her development into the sorceress known as Magik.
The visual direction of the series was a notable departure for Marvel at the time, with John Buscema's grounded, classical illustrative style juxtaposing the surreal and nightmarish elements of the hellish Limbo landscape. Claremont intended the series to be a sophisticated exploration of corruption and resilience. Upon its debut, the miniseries was well-received by readers and critics alike for its dark tone and its significant contribution to the broader X-Men mythology, effectively establishing Illyana as one of the most complex mutants in the Marvel Universe.
