Mandrake: Merlín el Mago #4

Mandrake: Merlín el Mago was a Spanish-language comic series published in the mid-20th century, dedicated to the adventures of Lee Falk’s iconic stage magician, Mandrake the Magician. This specific series repackaged the classic American newspaper strips, which debuted in 1934, for the Spanish-speaking market. These issues were intended to provide affordable, serialized entertainment, bringing the exotic adventures of Mandrake and his companion Lothar to a burgeoning audience of European comic readers.

The character design of Mandrake, featuring his signature tuxedo, top hat, and cape, was originally established by artist Phil Davis under the direction of Lee Falk. Davis’s clean, illustrative style defined the 'hypnotic' visual language of the strip, focusing on bold ink work and dynamic, high-contrast panels. When licensed for international reprints like this Spanish edition, the original artwork was often repurposed to fit local publication formats, maintaining the classic mid-century aesthetic that solidified Mandrake as a foundational archetype in the history of the superhero and mystery genres.
