Mandrake: Merlín el Mago #9

Mandrake: Merlín el Mago was a Spanish-language comic series that brought Lee Falk’s iconic stage magician, Mandrake the Magician, to audiences in Spain and Latin America. Issue number 9 was published as part of an effort to revitalize classic pulp adventure characters for a post-war readership, leaning into the aesthetic of the Golden Age of comics while adapting the storytelling to suit local serialized formats. The series often utilized artwork derived from original American newspaper strips, rearranged and recolored to fit the compact booklet style popular at the time.

The character of Mandrake, created by Lee Falk and artist Phil Davis in 1934, was revolutionary for his time as one of the first costumed heroes in comic history. The design prioritized elegance and mystery, characterized by the signature top hat, cape, and tuxedo, which set a visual template for the suave, hypnotic investigator. While the specific production team behind issue #9 was focused on regional syndication, the enduring appeal of the issue lies in its commitment to the surreal, high-stakes adventures that defined Falk’s vision of a protagonist who used willpower and illusion rather than brute force to overcome his adversaries.
