Many Ghosts of Dr. Graves #18

Published by Charlton Comics in 1969, The Many Ghosts of Dr. Graves #18 arrived during the height of the horror anthology boom that defined the company's output in the late 1960s. The series centered on the titular Dr. Graves, a spectral host who acted as an intermediary for tales of the supernatural, fitting squarely into the tradition of macabre narrators popularized by EC Comics. By this stage in the series, the format had settled into a reliable rhythm of suspenseful, atmospheric storytelling designed to appeal to readers looking for quick, spine-tingling narratives.

The issue features cover art and interior illustrations synonymous with the house style of Charlton’s mid-century horror stable. Working within the constraints of the publisher’s low-budget production model, the creative teams often leaned into stark, high-contrast visuals to maximize impact on the newsprint. While Charlton titles were frequently overlooked by mainstream critics at the time due to their inexpensive production values, the series has since gained a cult following for its earnest commitment to the genre and the inclusion of work from notable artists who navigated the publisher’s unique editorial landscape.
