Where it came from
Published by Charlton Comics in 1974, Many Ghosts of Dr. Graves #22 serves as a quintessential example of the 1970s horror anthology trend. During this period, Charlton thrived by utilizing a stable of efficient creators to produce low-cost, genre-focused periodicals that filled newsstand spinner racks alongside more mainstream superhero titles. The series centered on the titular Dr. Graves, a supernatural narrator who facilitated macabre tales in a manner similar to EC Comics' iconic horror hosts.
The interior artwork reflects the house style of the era, emphasizing stark contrast and moody, atmosphere-heavy storytelling. Like many Charlton issues, the creative team focused on punchy, twist-ending narratives designed to engage young readers who sought affordable supernatural thrills. While the series was not as critically heralded as its competitors, it remains a beloved piece of mid-tier bronze age publishing, valued today for its distinctively campy cover art and the dedication of its production team to the pre-Code horror aesthetic.
