Where it came from
The Many Ghosts of Dr. Graves was a staple of the horror-anthology boom during the late 1960s and 1970s, published by Charlton Comics. Issue number 20, released in late 1969, emerged during a period when the publisher leaned heavily into supernatural suspense to compete with the broader market. The series focused on the titular Dr. Graves, a character who served as an eerie, omniscient host for various morality-driven tales of the macabre.
The art and editorial direction for this title were deeply influenced by the house style of Charlton Comics, often featuring the work of legendary creators like Steve Ditko. The design aimed for a classic, atmospheric dread that utilized bold, high-contrast layouts typical of the bronze age of comics. Upon release, the issue was received as a quintessential piece of the era's budget-friendly horror, prized for its imaginative, if often campy, storytelling and distinct visual aesthetic.
