Where it came from
Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #7 was published in November 1984 as part of the landmark limited series intended to cross-promote Mattel's new toy line. Marvel editor-in-chief Jim Shooter conceived the crossover to capitalize on the popularity of their heroes within a toy-centric market, mandating that the stories focus on conflict to drive action figure sales.
The issue features artwork by Mike Zeck, who provided a gritty and kinetic visual style that helped define the aesthetic of the 1980s Marvel universe. Within this installment, the plot deepens the psychological stakes of the Beyonder's battle, a narrative choice that was well-received by fans for its focus on character dynamics, cementing the series as a pivotal moment in the history of shared-universe storytelling.
