Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #8

Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #8 was published in December 1984 as the penultimate installment of a landmark twelve-issue limited series. Marvel conceived the crossover primarily as a marketing vehicle, prompted by a request from toy manufacturer Mattel, which sought to produce a line of action figures based on a major comic book event. The story, written by Jim Shooter and illustrated by Mike Zeck and John Beatty, follows a group of heroes and villains transported to a distant planet by an omnipotent entity known as the Beyonder.

This specific issue gained legendary status within the industry because it depicts Spider-Man discovering and bonding with the alien black costume for the first time. The design, credited to Jim Shooter with input from fan Randy Schueller, introduced a sleek, minimalist aesthetic that starkly contrasted with the hero’s traditional red-and-blue garb. The suit’s organic nature and hidden history were later expanded upon to reveal it as a sentient symbiote, eventually leading to the creation of the character Venom, making this issue a pivotal point in modern comic book mythology.
