Where it came from
Nellie the Nurse #17 was published by Timely Comics, the predecessor to Marvel, during the mid-1940s. This title belonged to a popular genre of lighthearted, gag-oriented comic books that emerged in the post-war era, moving away from the more intense superhero narratives that had previously dominated the market. The series capitalized on the public's fascination with domestic and professional humor, positioning its protagonist as a resilient and often whimsical figure navigating the clinical setting.
The character and the series are frequently associated with the creative efforts of Vince Alascia and various other illustrators who provided the characteristic house style for Timely's humor line. The artwork favored a cartoonish, expressive aesthetic designed to make the character's daily struggles approachable and amusing for a mass-market audience. As a staple of the 'nurse humor' subgenre, the book was well-received by readers looking for escapism and remains a significant artifact for collectors interested in the evolution of Marvel’s publishing identity prior to the Silver Age.
