Where it came from
Nellie the Nurse #2 was published in 1945 by Timely Comics, the predecessor to Marvel. Released during the tail end of the Golden Age of comic books, the series was part of a burgeoning genre of humor and romance titles featuring plucky, adventurous heroines. The stories focused on the lighthearted workplace mishaps of a nurse, reflecting the cultural interest in the medical profession during the mid-1940s.
The character was created and illustrated by Al Hartley, a prolific artist known for his clean, expressive style. Hartley sought to blend slapstick comedy with the romantic tropes of the era, creating an accessible and cheery aesthetic that appealed to a wide youth audience. The series was well-received as a charming diversion from the darker crime and superhero comics of the time, solidifying Hartley's reputation as a versatile talent in the industry.
