Where it came from
Oldman, written by Renato Perez and illustrated by Manuel Preitano, debuted in the mid-2010s as a dark fantasy comic series published by Scout Comics. The narrative centers on a retired, weary protagonist forced back into a world of magic and violence, deliberately subverting traditional tropes of the legendary hero to explore themes of aging, regret, and the weight of legacy. Issue #2 continues the unfolding mystery of the protagonist's past, maintaining the gritty, atmospheric aesthetic established in the debut.
The visual design of the series relies on a somber, muted color palette that complements the tone of a high-fantasy world seen through the lens of human decay. Preitano’s illustrations were intended to evoke a sense of tactile realism, grounding supernatural elements in gritty, textured detail. Upon its release, the series was noted by critics for its ambitious world-building and character-driven approach, finding a dedicated niche among readers who prefer character studies over standard epic fantasy fare.
