Oltretomba #10

Oltretomba was a prominent Italian horror comic series launched in the early 1970s, fitting squarely into the era's 'fumetti neri' tradition that pushed the boundaries of eroticism and supernatural gore. Produced by Edifumetto and spearheaded by Renzo Barbieri, the series was designed to satisfy a growing market for transgressive, pocket-sized adult entertainment. These books were crafted as inexpensive, disposable thrills, utilizing striking cover art and lurid narratives to capture the attention of commuters at newsstands across Italy.

The visual identity of the series was defined by artists who prioritized dark, gothic aesthetics and visceral shock value, often drawing inspiration from classic horror tropes while subverting them with explicit content. The tenth issue, like its peers, adhered to a formula of short, self-contained stories meant to unsettle and titillate. While frequently criticized by moral watchdogs of the period for their explicit nature, the Oltretomba issues are now recognized by collectors as quintessential artifacts of 1970s Italian pop culture, representing a unique intersection of low-brow publishing and bold, uninhibited graphic storytelling.
