Where it came from
Oldman is a stylized comic series written by Stuart Moore and illustrated by Fred Fordham, released through Image Comics. The series fits within the broader tradition of speculative fiction and dystopian storytelling, centering on a protagonist navigating a world where the concept of aging and the passage of time are treated with a unique, often surreal, narrative lens. It reflects a trend in independent comics from the mid-2010s that prioritized atmospheric world-building and character-driven stakes over conventional superhero tropes.
The visual identity of Oldman is defined by Fordham’s clean, expressive line work, which balances a grounded sense of reality with the unsettling nature of the setting. The creative team aimed to explore themes of legacy, memory, and the friction between the individual and a rapidly changing society. Upon its release, the series was noted for its cohesive aesthetic and its departure from typical genre expectations, finding a dedicated readership among fans of creator-owned, literary-minded comics.
