Where it came from
Our Fighting Forces #123, published by DC Comics in early 1970, arrived during a pivotal transitional era for the publisher's war titles. At this time, DC was moving away from the traditional, sanitized portrayals of combat to embrace a more nuanced, character-driven approach under the influence of editors like Joe Kubert and Robert Kanigher. This specific issue features the recurring Losers feature, a group of disparate soldiers struggling for survival behind enemy lines.
The interior art and cover design reflect the grit and kinetic energy associated with the era's house style. By focusing on the psychological toll of war rather than mere heroics, the creators aimed to maintain relevance for a readership that was increasingly disillusioned by real-world global conflicts. The series remains highly regarded by collectors for its integration of strong illustrative talent and the evolution of the war genre into a more contemplative form of storytelling.
