Where it came from
Our Fighting Forces #106 was published by DC Comics in 1967 during the Silver Age of comics, a period defined by the publisher's experimentation with war-themed anthologies. The series became particularly notable for its focus on the Losers, a recurring team of misfit soldiers who survived impossible odds, reflecting the era's shift toward more serialized, character-driven storytelling within the traditionally episodic genre of war comics.
The issue features the iconic work of writer Robert Kanigher and artist Russ Heath, who were instrumental in shaping the aesthetic of DC’s military titles. Heath was widely respected for his meticulous attention to detail regarding weaponry and uniforms, aiming to ground the fantastical scenarios in a recognizable historical reality. The creative direction prioritized gritty realism and emotional resilience, which helped the title secure a dedicated readership that appreciated the collaborative synergy between the script's dark themes and the sharp, clean lines of the illustration.
