Pancho Villa: Monster Hunter #1

Pancho Villa: Monster Hunter #1 was released in 2013 as the debut installment of a limited comic book series published by Robot Paper. Created by writer Eric Esquivel and artist Mario Zapata, the series was conceived as an irreverent mash-up of historical biographical elements and supernatural horror tropes. By placing a legendary figure of the Mexican Revolution into a genre narrative involving monsters and folklore, the creators sought to provide a stylized, pulp-fiction take on traditional historical icons.

The visual direction, handled by Zapata, leans heavily into gritty, action-oriented aesthetics meant to reflect the high-stakes atmosphere of the revolution while integrating fantastical design elements for the creature antagonists. Upon its release, the comic was noted for its unconventional premise and its attempt to merge cultural heritage with genre entertainment. It serves as a distinct example of the independent comic landscape from the early 2010s that explored historical remixing.
