Where it came from
Project Riese, an underground comic series exploring the historical mysteries of the Nazi-era construction project of the same name in the Owl Mountains, emerged as a niche contribution to speculative historical fiction. Created by independent creators, the series utilizes a stark, investigative aesthetic to blend documented architectural facts with urban legends surrounding the secret subterranean facility. The sixth issue functions as a pivotal point in the narrative arc, focusing on the atmospheric dread of the tunnel systems.
The design of the series centers on high-contrast black and white linework, intended to mirror the oppressive, claustrophobic nature of the mines. It was produced for an audience interested in historical anomalies and dark fringe theories, and while it remains a cult title, it has been noted by critics for its research into the historical site's geography and the eerie, somber tone captured by its visual direction.
