Red Sonja: She-Devil with a Sword #1

Red Sonja: She-Devil with a Sword #1, published by Dynamite Entertainment in 2005, marked a significant relaunch for the character originally created by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith for Marvel Comics in the 1970s. After years of dormancy following the end of her previous ongoing series, Dynamite secured the licensing rights to bring the character back to monthly comic books, aiming to modernize her aesthetic while remaining faithful to the sword-and-sorcery tropes defined by Robert E. Howard’s influence.

The debut issue featured a narrative by Michael Avon Oeming and Mike Carey, with interior art by Mel Rubi and a variety of high-profile variant covers, most notably by Adam Hughes. The creative direction sought to ground Red Sonja in a gritty, high-fantasy landscape that balanced action-heavy storytelling with a more nuanced exploration of her warrior ethos. The issue was well-received by the comic industry as a successful revitalization of a legacy character, effectively establishing Dynamite as a major player in the licensed fantasy comic market.
