Reign of the Zodiac #2

Reign of the Zodiac was launched by DC Comics in 2003 as a limited series written by Keith Giffen and illustrated by Colleen Doran. The series sought to reinterpret the classic DC Comics concept of the Zodiac—a group of cosmic-powered entities—within a modern, space-faring narrative that leaned into grand scale science fiction and intricate character drama. It emerged during a period where DC was actively exploring its cosmic corners, attempting to establish a fresh mythos for characters that had largely remained in the background of the DC Universe for decades.

Colleen Doran’s art style was instrumental in defining the series' distinct visual identity, which favored sweeping vistas and expressive character work over traditional superhero aesthetics. The creative team aimed for a tone that felt mythic yet grounded in interpersonal conflict, moving away from the more kinetic, punchy style prevalent in mainstream comics at the time. While the series was lauded by critics for its ambitious world-building and Doran's lush, detailed illustrations, it struggled to maintain a broad readership, eventually becoming a cult favorite known for its unique aesthetic and singular vision.
