Where it came from
Reign of the Zodiac was published by DC Comics under their WildStorm imprint starting in 2003. This limited series was conceived to reimagine the classic astrological archetypes within a science fiction context, positioning the signs as powerful, ancient entities entangled in cosmic conflict. The series serves as a notable example of the early 2000s trend toward deconstructing mythological tropes through a gritty, modern comic book lens.
The issue features the creative collaboration of writer Jai Nitz and artist Phi. The visual direction aimed for a sleek, contemporary aesthetic that contrasted the ethereal nature of the zodiac symbols with the stark, often harsh environments of space opera. Upon its release, the series was recognized for its ambitious world-building, though it remains a niche entry within the broader WildStorm catalog, noted more for its stylistic experimentation than widespread mainstream reach.
