Where it came from
Reign of the Zodiac was published by DC Comics in 2003 as a twelve-issue limited series, conceived by writer Jai Nitz and artist Cliff Richards. The narrative centers on a futuristic, interstellar society where social status and power are dictated by zodiac-based archetypes. It emerged during a period in which DC was exploring distinct, self-contained genre experiments, attempting to blend traditional superhero tropes with expansive science fiction world-building.
The aesthetic of the series, particularly the work of Cliff Richards, leaned into the sleek, digital-heavy art style prevalent in the early 2000s comic book industry. The series sought to modernize the concept of the zodiac by placing these archetypes into a high-stakes, epic conflict. While the series remains a niche entry in the DC library, it is frequently cited by collectors for its commitment to a cohesive, original mythos that operates independently from the primary DC Universe continuity.
