Rikki #2

Rikki was a self-published underground comic series created by artist and writer Carol Lay, emerging from the vibrant independent comics scene of the mid-1980s. The series followed the life of the titular character, a young woman navigating the complexities of urban existence, relationships, and the eccentricities of contemporary society. The work is noted for Lay’s distinct, clean linework and her ability to weave satirical commentary into episodic narrative storytelling, capturing the specific anxieties and cultural zeitgeist of the decade.

As an independent production, the Rikki series exemplifies the DIY spirit of the era's alternative press, where creators often bypassed traditional publishing houses to maintain complete artistic control. While the series did not achieve mainstream saturation, it earned a dedicated following among readers of the alternative comix movement, who valued its grounded perspective and the author's sharp observational humor. It remains a notable example of the solo-creator-driven comics that helped pave the way for the graphic novel boom of the following decades.
