Rikki #5

Rikki was a short-lived independent comic series published by Antarctic Press in the mid-1990s. The title emerged during a period of experimentation within the small-press scene, which sought to capture the aesthetic of Japanese manga and anime influences that were beginning to permeate Western independent publishing. The series served as a showcase for character-driven storytelling, focusing on the titular protagonist in a style that balanced action with the expressive, stylized artwork characteristic of the era's emerging manga-inspired movement.

The art style and character design for the series were helmed by David Hutchinson, a prolific contributor to the Antarctic Press catalog. Hutchinson utilized a clean, dynamic line work that aimed to make the book accessible to readers interested in the growing fusion of American indie sensibilities and manga conventions. Upon its release, the issue was received primarily by a niche audience of collectors who frequented local comic shops, remaining a localized artifact of the mid-90s boom in alternative and genre-blending serial comics.
