Roarin' Rick's Rare Bit Fiends #1

Roarin' Rick's Rare Bit Fiends #1 was published in 1994 as part of an independent comic series created by Rick Veitch. Coming out of the fertile alternative comics scene of the 1990s, the series was designed as a showcase for Veitch's stream-of-consciousness storytelling and his fascination with dream logic. The title itself serves as a deliberate nod to Winsor McCay’s classic early 20th-century comic strip Dream of the Rarebit Fiend, bridging the gap between historical surrealist comics and the experimental aesthetic of the nineties.

Veitch both wrote and illustrated the series, employing a fluid, expressive style that favored rapid, subconscious imagery over rigid panels. The work was generally well-received by critics and readers of the alternative press for its commitment to the surreal and the bizarre, standing out as a singular, creator-owned project that prioritized the artist's personal vision over traditional superhero narrative structures. It remains a hallmark of Veitch's independent catalog and his distinctive approach to visual narrative.
