Where it came from
Roarin' Rick's Rare Bit Fiends was an experimental anthology comic series created and self-published by Rick Veitch throughout the 1990s. Issue number 10, released during this period, served as a showcase for Veitch's surrealist sensibilities and his unique approach to the medium, often utilizing the series as a laboratory for non-linear storytelling and dream-inspired imagery that pushed against the conventions of mainstream superhero comics.
The design of the series reflected Veitch's career-long interest in avant-garde art and the history of the comic strip. Veitch, a veteran artist known for his work with Alan Moore and his tenure at DC Comics, crafted these issues with a specific focus on the 'rare bit'—a nod to Winsor McCay’s Dream of the Rarebit Fiend. The work was received by the independent comics community as a vital piece of the creator-owned movement, celebrated for its stylistic audacity and the intimacy of its production.
