Where it came from
Roarin' Rick's Rare Bit Fiends was an experimental anthology series created and illustrated by underground cartoonist Rick Veitch, launched in 1994. The series originated during a period when Veitch sought greater creative autonomy outside of mainstream comic publishers. The work is deeply rooted in surrealism, often capturing the artist's personal dream journals and subconscious imagery, presented in a distinctive black-and-white style that emphasized the raw, unfiltered nature of dream recollection.
Issue #4, released in late 1994, continues the series' exploration of non-linear storytelling and dream-inspired narratives. Veitch designed the series as a showcase for the unique potential of the medium to bridge reality and fantasy, utilizing dense linework to evoke the disorientation of the dream state. Upon its release, the series was well-regarded among critics and fans of alternative comics, noted for its innovative structural approach and its bold departure from traditional superhero or genre-based comic book conventions.
