Sam Slade Robo-Hunter #11

Sam Slade: Robo-Hunter #11 is a key installment in the long-running science fiction comic series originally published in the British weekly anthology 2000 AD. Debuting in the late 1970s, the series was created by writer John Wagner and artist Ian Gibson, emerging during a period when the comic was redefining British genre fiction with its satirical, gritty, and often absurdist take on futuristic tropes. The character of Sam Slade, a cigar-chomping private investigator specializing in tracking down rogue droids, served as a comedic counterpoint to the more somber tone of Judge Dredd, which shared the same publication pages.

The visual identity of this series was heavily defined by Ian Gibson’s intricate, detailed line work and his ability to render complex, cluttered mechanical environments with a distinct sense of humor. Issue #11 fits into the wider canon of the series by continuing the classic trope of the 'everyman' detective struggling against increasingly competent and bizarre robotic threats. Upon its release, the series was well-received for its blend of hard-boiled detective noir and slapstick science fiction, ultimately securing its place as a cult classic within the 2000 AD legacy.
