Sam Slade Robo-Hunter #4

Sam Slade Robo-Hunter debuted in the pages of the British science fiction anthology 2000 AD in 1978. Created by writer John Wagner and artist Ian Gibson, the series was designed as a satirical take on the hard-boiled detective genre, reimagined within a world overrun by eccentric and often malfunctioning robots. Issue 4 arrived as part of the initial momentum for the comic, which was quickly finding its footing as a cornerstone of British speculative fiction by blending sharp humor with detailed, kinetic illustrations.

Ian Gibson’s visual style was instrumental in defining the series, utilizing intricate line work to create a distinctively cluttered, high-tech aesthetic that mirrored the chaotic urban environments of the stories. The character of Sam Slade, a cynical cigar-chomping private investigator, served as the perfect foil for the absurd robot populations he was hired to hunt. The series was well received by readers of the era for its subversive tone and remains a notable example of the creative freedom exercised by the early 2000 AD editorial team.
