Where it came from
Secret Origins #19 was published by DC Comics in October 1987 as part of a series dedicated to re-telling and modernizing the backstories of various established characters. During this era of DC's history, the company was actively streamlining its continuity following the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths, and the anthology format allowed creators to provide definitive versions of character origins for a new generation of readers.
This specific issue features the origin of the Doom Patrol, written by Paul Kupperberg with art by Erik Larsen and Kelley Jones. The story focuses on the team's tragic transformation and their subsequent rise as a dysfunctional group of heroes. The design and narrative approach sought to emphasize the character-driven, melancholic tone that the Doom Patrol was known for, aiming to balance classic Silver Age concepts with the more grounded, psychological storytelling prevalent in late 1980s comics.
