Where it came from
Secret Origins number 17 was published by DC Comics in August 1987 as part of a series dedicated to retelling and updating the backstories of iconic superheroes. This particular issue focuses on the Martian Manhunter, J'onn J'onzz, providing a modernized take on his arrival on Earth and his integration into the Justice League. The issue was written by J.M. DeMatteis and features artwork by Joe Staton and Bruce Patterson, who sought to add emotional depth to the character's status as a displaced alien.
The creative team aimed to reconcile the character's silver-age roots with a more grounded, psychological narrative style prevalent in the late 1980s. Upon release, the issue was well-received by fans and critics for its melancholic tone and its effort to solidify the Martian Manhunter's identity within the post-Crisis on Infinite Earths DC Universe. It remains a notable entry in the series for its success in transforming a secondary character into a cornerstone of the Justice League lore.
