Where it came from
Secret Origins #16 was published by DC Comics in July 1987 as part of a series dedicated to re-telling and modernizing the backstories of legacy characters within the DC Universe. This specific issue served as a pivotal narrative space to bridge classic continuity with the post-Crisis on Infinite Earths landscape, allowing writers and artists to provide definitive accounts of characters who had undergone significant revisions during the late 1980s.
The issue features the origin of the Captain Marvel family, written by Roy Thomas with art by Marshall Rogers. Thomas was known for his encyclopedic knowledge of Golden Age comics, and he utilized this opportunity to harmonize the complex history of the Fawcett Comics characters following their integration into DC's multiverse. Marshall Rogers, celebrated for his clean, architectural style, provided a visual aesthetic that grounded the fantastical elements of the Shazam mythos in a style reminiscent of the era's sophisticated storytelling approaches.
