Where it came from
Secrets of Haunted House was a long-running anthology series published by DC Comics during the late 1970s and early 1980s, emerging during a period when horror-themed comics were enjoying a resurgence in popularity. Issue number 28, released in 1980, fits firmly within this era of supernatural storytelling. These issues were designed to evoke a sense of eerie suspense, utilizing a rotating cast of writers and artists to explore gothic, paranormal, and psychological horror themes that were staples of DC’s mystery imprint.
The art and editorial direction for this period were heavily influenced by the tradition of classic suspense comics like Tales from the Crypt, though tempered by the stricter oversight of the Comics Code Authority. The visual style often featured expressive, shadowed ink work and dramatic panel compositions intended to maximize tension. While the series was never intended to be groundbreaking, it was well-received as a reliable and atmospheric staple for fans of pulp horror, contributing to the broader legacy of DC's 'house of mystery' style storytelling.
