Sennen Kitsune: Kanpō 「Sōjinki」 Yori #14

Sennen Kitsune: Kanpō 「Sōjinki」 Yori, or 'A Thousand Year Fox: From the Herbalist’s Records', emerged as a niche serial in the early 2000s, blending traditional Japanese folklore with a stylized, meditative approach to historical fantasy. Issue #14 arrived at the midpoint of a narrative arc that explored the intersection of botanical medicine and supernatural mythology. The series was designed to evoke the aesthetic of mid-century manga while utilizing modern, high-contrast ink techniques intended to reflect the shifting temperaments of the title character.

The character design and visual direction were primarily helmed by a small boutique studio focusing on intricate, brush-heavy illustrations. Upon its release, the issue received a modest but dedicated reception among enthusiasts of avant-garde serials, praised primarily for its atmospheric pacing and the detailed, almost scholarly approach to the series' fictionalized medicinal lore. It serves as a representative example of the period's experimental independent publishing, where serialized art leaned more into illustrative storytelling than conventional action-oriented tropes.
