Sergio Aragonés Groo the Wanderer #118

Groo the Wanderer #118 was published in 1993 during the long-running series' tenure at Image Comics. Created by the legendary cartoonist Sergio Aragonés and writer Mark Evanier, the character Groo originated in the early 1980s as a satirical take on sword-and-sorcery tropes. By the time this issue was released, the series had already established its enduring formula: the dim-witted but deadly barbarian wandering a landscape of misadventures, consistently accompanied by his loyal canine companion, Rufferto.

The visual identity of the series is defined entirely by Aragonés' unmistakable, fluid pen-and-ink style, which prioritizes expressive character acting and dense, background-gag-filled panels over traditional comic book aesthetics. This issue remains a hallmark of the collaborative process between Aragonés and Evanier, reflecting their decades-long partnership that successfully navigated shifts between several major publishers, including Pacific, Marvel's Epic imprint, and Image, while maintaining a devoted cult following for its consistent humor and social commentary.
