Sergio Aragonés Groo the Wanderer #117

Groo the Wanderer issue 117 was published in 1993 during the title's long-running tenure at Image Comics. Created by the legendary cartoonist Sergio Aragonés in collaboration with writer Mark Evanier and letterer Stan Sakai, the series follows the misadventures of a dim-witted but deadly mercenary. This specific era of the title maintained the satirical, slapstick tone that defined the series since its inception in the early 1980s, serving as a lighthearted counterpoint to the more somber comic book trends prevalent during the early 1990s.

The visual identity of the book is defined by Aragonés’s signature fluid, wordless-style character acting, which allows the physical comedy to drive the narrative alongside Evanier’s sharp, witty dialogue. By the time issue 117 arrived, the creative team had solidified a dedicated cult following that appreciated the series' consistency and its willingness to poke fun at fantasy tropes and the comic industry itself. It remains a hallmark of creator-owned independence, reflecting a decades-long partnership that has been widely celebrated for its consistency and humor.
