Where it came from
Released in 1994 by Dark Horse Comics, Tales of the Jedi - Dark Lords of the Sith #1 marked a pivotal expansion of the Star Wars Expanded Universe. Set thousands of years before the events of the original films, the series was created to explore the ancient origins of the Jedi and Sith conflict, specifically detailing the fall of the Jedi Knight Exar Kun to the dark side. This narrative served as a foundational pillar for the Old Republic era of Star Wars storytelling.
The series was written by Tom Veitch and Kevin J. Anderson, with artistic contributions from Chris Gossett and interior art by Art Wetherell. The creative team aimed to establish a distinct, mythic aesthetic for the ancient galaxy, distancing the visual design from the worn, industrial look of the Galactic Civil War. Upon its release, the series was well-received by fans and critics alike, praised for successfully translating the vast scope of galactic history into a serialized comic format.
