Where it came from
Released in 1995 by Dark Horse Comics, this issue marks the conclusion of the six-part Dark Lords of the Sith miniseries. Set thousands of years before the events of the original Star Wars films, the narrative explores the fall of Exar Kun and the rise of the Sith in the Old Republic era. It was crafted during a period when the Star Wars expanded universe was seeing a massive resurgence in literature and graphic storytelling, helping to establish the aesthetic and lore of the ancient Jedi Order.
The series was written by Tom Veitch and Kevin J. Anderson, with artistic contributions by Chris Gossett and Art Wetherell. The creative team aimed to bridge the gap between high-fantasy mythos and the grittier tone of the emerging Star Wars Expanded Universe. The artwork is noted for its distinctive painterly style, which deviated from traditional comic book cel-shading to create a more immersive and atmospheric depiction of the galaxy's darker history, receiving generally positive reviews for its ambitious scope.
