Stormwatch #1

Stormwatch #1 was published by Image Comics in March 1993, emerging during the peak of the creator-driven boom that defined the company's early years. Created by writer Brandon Choi and artist Jim Lee, the series was conceived as a cornerstone of the WildStorm shared universe, focusing on a government-sanctioned team of superhumans tasked with global intervention. It reflected the industry's shift toward high-concept, kinetic action-heavy storytelling that prioritized visual spectacle.

The design and visual tone of the book were heavily influenced by Jim Lee's distinct aesthetic, which combined hyper-detailed character designs with dynamic, cinematic layouts. The debut was received with significant commercial success, driven by the massive popularity of the Image founders at the time. While critics of the era often noted its reliance on 1990s tropes and aggressive styling, the title succeeded in establishing a robust mythology that eventually served as a launchpad for Warren Ellis’s transformative run on the series later in the decade.
