Where it came from
Stormwatch #44, published in 1997 by Image Comics under the WildStorm imprint, represents a pivotal moment in the series’ transition toward the gritty, political espionage tone that would eventually define The Authority. Created during the tenure of writer Warren Ellis, this issue serves as a bridge, furthering the deconstruction of the superhero archetype by placing the team within an increasingly complex and morally gray global landscape.
The issue features artwork by Bryan Hitch, whose evolving cinematic style began to take root during this period. Hitch’s departure from the hyper-exaggerated aesthetic common to 1990s comics toward a more grounded, wide-screen realism was critically lauded for elevating the stakes of the narrative. The aesthetic shift in this issue was instrumental in reshaping the visual language of modern superhero team books, moving away from simple combat panels toward expansive, environmental storytelling.
