Where it came from
Stormwatch #48 was published in 1997 during the later years of the original Image Comics series. Created by Jim Lee’s WildStorm imprint, the series focused on a United Nations-sanctioned team of superhumans tasked with global intervention. By this point in the publication history, the book had undergone a significant tonal shift under the stewardship of writer Warren Ellis, who moved the narrative toward a more cynical, grounded, and politically complex exploration of the superhero genre.
The issue features artwork that reflects the house style of the 1990s WildStorm aesthetic, characterized by sharp linework and dynamic panel layouts. As part of the lead-up to the dramatic conclusion of the series, this issue contributes to the broader arc that eventually pivoted into the critically acclaimed Authority series. It serves as a representative example of the transitional period where mainstream comics began experimenting with darker themes and deconstructionist storytelling.
